Current self or remembering self?
Daniel Kahneman suggests that there are 2 ways through which you decide whether or not you are happy: the current self and the remembering self.
The current self feels good when you experience nice small things: a coffee break, a cigar, a trip, a walk in the park, a movie, a few minutes of sleep in the morning, good music or easy days at work. The current self doesn’t want to be caged, to think of the future, it just wants to have fun in the present, all the time.
The remembering self wants to build new unforgettable memories, so you can be proud of them for a long time in the future. It sometimes gives up instant gratification for what he could get in the future: a shorter vacation now for freedom later, a shorter work break for a bigger business later, no movies tonight for a better health later, waking up early so that you could do more in the long run, hard work so that you can be rich and do whatever you want, tough experiences so that you can grow yourself and inspire others.
Is it worth it?
As you might have noticed, my blog has now more categories, in order of their importance: business, climbing, travels. This is a first try of something different…
You meet, you both smile a lot and feel very energetic, you talk and everything seems perfect. The other one explains the idea, tells you he really wants you as his business partner, that you will have a large share of the business, that you will both make a lot of money, you will have massive impact. You have to bring some money, time and effort in the game but it’s fair sharing of contribution and of shares. All the talk lasts about an hour, maybe less, it’s all to good to be true. You fell you want to start the next day, you want to go all in. That day, you tell to all your close ones what a great idea you heard, what an opportunity… You are so eager to find out more.
